At Nettie's, S.F. meets East Coast fish shack

by Michael Bauer
San Francisco Chronicle
Sunday, December 14, 2008

"the crab was the best I've ever had..."

"On all four visits, including one at lunch when it was so balmy I was able to sit on the patio overlooking Union Street with my dog at my feet, I wavered between 2 1/2 and three stars for food. In the end the price-to-quality ratio tipped the balance. The menu is simple, but it's extremely well executed, and no main course, except for the lobster roll and whole fish, is more than $19. That's an incredible deal, given the high-traffic location and the upscale beach-house decor."

Bay Area's best new restaurants of 2008

by Michael Bauer
San Francisco Chronicle

"In fact, 2008 was a very good year for restaurants. I awarded 13 restaurants three stars for food, only one fewer than in 2007. I thought maybe I was going soft in the star department, but return visits to many of these places have shown they remain consistently good."

"The opening of Dungeness crab season is like Christmas for many people, so it's about time we had a restaurant that lets us get down and dirty with the crustacean. Each Sunday, Nettie's has a $38 crab feed where diners tackle the crab from scratch."

"'I was a big crab fan,' Leitner says. 'Caught fresh, boiled, served with drawn butter. It's hard to go wrong with that.' Nowadays, Leitner wears the toque at Nettie's Crab Shack, a new San Francisco restaurant that reserves a starring role for Dungeness crab in crab cakes and cioppino-and in the shell."

San Francisco Examiner 2008Looking for Crab? Try Nettie's

By Patricia Unterman
Special to The Examiner
November 20, 2008

"One of the ironies of living in San Francisco — the Dungeness crab capital of the world — is that topquality live crab, simply steamed, is not easy to find. But that was before Nettie’s Crab Shack came along. This ebullient local version of an East Coast lobster shack applies San Francisco standards of ingredient provenance to both beloved American classics and sophisticated West Coast favorites."
